As many of you know, I live an predomintely male household. I do the cooking, the cleaning, the doggie sitting, the bovine nurturing. I’m even responsible for the hay and corn run each week. So last night after baby sitting the grandson, I was tired. I resorted to the low devilish trick of using a banquet lazzana dinner.
My family sat down and began to eat. It was at this point that things began to get a bit rough. My twenty-one year old son who is the fire fighter remarked how he cooked a pork roast for the firehouse and “Gosh gee mom, if any had been left I’d have brought you some?” Yeah, I was so thrilled. I put my fork down and gave that look. You mothers out there know what I’m talking about. The look over the glasses, the one void of any emotion, the one that says check behind you there’s an ass kicking coming- and said, “You cooked?”
I’ve haven’t seen an Adam’s apple bobble so since a public hanging. He could only nod as the color left his cheeks, the poor fuzz cheeks that they are. I smiled brightly. Good, I’m serving notice that I’m not cooking next Sunday. I can’t wait to see what you’ll fix.
Oh but mom its different when I’m at the station. Everybody helps.
Yeah, my fingers began drumming on the table. My husband got up and slid his plate and drink to the edge and sat down, the chair angled ready to bolt.
Really? Helping IN THE KITCHEN. Again that wild bobbing of the Adam’s Apple. HUM…..
Then my son picked up a terrible stutter. I raised one eyebrow worthy of a Vulcan, and said. “Good since you understand help. I cooked. You clear the table and wash the dishes.
Hum.. I cleared the table and went to work on my novel. This morning, I scraped the sauce off my plates and washed the dishes.
Better break it to your children, the dish fairy is dead tonight and the tooth fairy is next.

Wow,
I just finished going over the second round of edits for my second book in a series. Its nerve wracking everytime I see my editor’s name on the emails. I can feel my heart pounding, I get light headed and my fingers tremble. I fear the worse but her kind comments always make me feel so much better.
I’ve been told I need to promote more. I also need to play up the angle of …you know …S – E – X. I’m not a prude. I KNOW thats how we all got here save one but geezzzzzzzzzzz… to me its like the bonus to a good story not the central key. but for the sake of argument. I am going to put a little whoo hooo on the blog here for titilating interest.
From Sweetbrier Academy Book One, Having Faith… 2.99 e print download at www.redrosepublishing.com …

“Miss Benedict says that our rooms should offer comfort. They should make a man feel at home, not that he has to get in, get it done, and be gone in the next minute,” she replied.

Her voice was a bit hushed. Thaddeus turned and found her leaning against the door. The corners of her mouth turned in a coy response and he heard the lock turn. “May I pour you a drink?” she asked moving away from the doorway to the small decanter on the table near the basin and pitcher.

“Yeah, a small one,” he replied. Standing in the center of the room, near the bed, he wondered where to sit, the only chair too small to hold his frame.

As if sensing his dilemma, Faith whispered. “You may sit on the bed.”

He turned and looked at the large feather bed, “Thanks.”

Easing his frame down, Thaddeus savored the softness rubbing his hand across the satin ticking of the comforter. Across the way, the cork pop from the bottle and the soft flow of liquid poured into the glass. The soft whispers of her slippers against the carpet made him look in anticipation at her direction. In her hand she held one goblet of golden bubbles

“Champagne” He acknowledged, reaching for the glass.

Faith stopped him with a shake of her head. Her lips pursed. He watched hypnotized as she ran a finger around the lip of the glass before dipping inside. Then lifting her hand, a single drop of the beverage fell into her opened mouth. Below his waist, Thaddeus felt himself rise.

“Ummm,” Her throat warbled the sound as she plunged her finger back into the drink, and then held it aloft for the second time.

Thaddeus needed no coaxing. He opened his mouth and allowed the nectar to fall into his lips. Peach, it tasted of peach. As she pulled away, he reached out and took her finger into his mouth. With slow diligence, his tongue began to stroke the single digit of her hand. First, down one side, then across to the other, finally he rolled his tongue around the length of it and drew firm against the skin.
Book Two Holding on to Hope coming soon

There are few moments in history that transcend time, move men to tears, or change the course of history. Today is such a day. The landscape of America has changed. Our country has chosen a man that is both African American and European American, a blend of the two races that ultimately founded this great country. It is the quiet wisdom, and grace that Obama shows in his leadership that makes this transistion possible. No other candidate can do this. The great architect of the universe takes few men and molds them to allow greatness to shine foth. We saw it in Washington who taught us how to lead. We saw it in Jefferson and Adams who crafted this magnificent building document made up of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, we learned the great strength from Lincoln who brought our country through the struggles of the issues that divided us with the thought that “Malice toward none and charity for all” should be applied. Now in his hour of triumph, Obama took time to honor his opponent, to offer the olive branch. His words will bring pleasure to our ears and soothe our souls as we begin to rebuild our nation. God Bless America and the men and omen who serve, who defend, and provide leadership. I am proud to be an American.

“Champaign.” He acknowledged, reaching for the glass.
It pleasured him to watch Faith’s lashes make a slow descent to her cheeks as the heat of passion painted her neck. She moved with his tongue to the left then to his right. Afraid she might fall, he placed his hands against her hips to steady her. His fingers felt the sudden attraction of lace. It seemed only natural to draw the material into a bunch and move it in slow circles against her. He could hear her breath increase with each rotation.
“Faith,” he whispered when he at last let go of her finger.
Her eyes opened and she stared at him. Her lips twitched, but did not break into a smile. It took three deep breaths, her breasts struggling to break free from the material that bound them, before she could answer. And when she did, it was only three words.
“Your drink, sir.”

Coming soon Holding on to Hope Book two of Sweetbrier expected in early 2009. Here is an unedited excerpt.

Hope leaned her head upon her knees a pleasant expression filled her face. “You haven’t told me why Panther’s Landing?”
“Ah, I haven’t, have I?” Jonathan drew a deep breath and sat up. “I chose Panther’s Landing for two reasons.”
“Two is a good number.”
“One, because Dr. Griffin and I worked together in the army and I owe him a great deal.”
“And the second?”
“The second, because out here, there are no memories to haunt my nights.”
She looked at him. Her face grew sober. “Your wife haunts you?”
“Not so much Suzanna, but what might have been.”
She watched his finger trace the blanket. Hope could feel a tug on her heartstrings. Leaning back, she laid her head against the wool and gazed into his face.
“I hear, if, is one of the largest words in the dictionary.”
“Hum,” he answered deep in thought.
Hope reached out and touched his hand. “You can’t build new bridges with seeds of doubt.”
He grinned and pulled her right hand toward him. “Is that what I’m doing? Planting seeds of doubt?”
She responded with a coy smile.
As he watched her, the color of the flames illuminated her skin. A blush of peach, the iridescent blue of her eyes going from light to dark, his eyes moved further down her face toward her mouth, cherry red and luscious. As he stared at her lips, they parted and her tongue hungrily moistened the dry flesh. Jonathan inwardly groaned.
He wanted her. God help him, he wanted to bury himself into her body and rock her just as her tempting looks fanned the heat of his passion. Sprawled across the blanket, her hair some pulled from its placement curled from the dampness around her face. An arm cast above her head and her face upturned to stare at him waiting to be kissed. Rolling to his stomach, he dropped a hand around her waist.

the day before, the day before, the day before, THE DAY
One of the great things about being a child and anticipating the holidays is the WAIT. When our fledgelings were young, we’d hear the question, “Is it Christmas yet?” So we devised things for the last five days to do.

Oh course on the day before the day, before the day ,before the day, before the day, before the day, beforeTHE DAY 9 ( 5 days before Christmas) we’d make the big sign to welcome SANTA with of course all the days before the day. On this poster the children would put one big wish they had. And we’d gather and watch a Charlie Brown’s Christmas on dvd.

4 days out (day before the day, before the day, before the day, before THE DAY) and yes every morning we’d greet them with that. Which was OUR way of driving them crazy. Was cookie day. Each child was allowed to make his favorite cookie. Which meant they got to mix, lick the pan, order the other siblings around and monitor the time. That night, we’d watch Its a Wonderful Life and tie jingle bells on our shoes so all the angels could get their wings before the holidays.

3 days ( the day before the day, before the day, before THE DAY) was wrap day.. children would go into the room wrap their gifts for their siblings and then we’d go to the store and each child had five dollars to buy can goods for the soup kitchen to help those less fortunate.

2 days ( the day before , the day before, THE DAY) Presents beneath the tree for family. This was our day to go out and see the sites. We were lucky enough to have a nursery which decorated with movible figures and we’d have out waffles and go out walk through look at all the decorations then have lunch at a fast food joint since that is a treat. That night would be other movies such as The Santa Clause Movie and string popcorn and whole cranberries for the birds or use peanutbutter and pine cones then layer on the bird seed.

1 day ITS NOW OFFICIALLY THE DAY BEFORE THE DAY

early rises we clean the house so Santa won’t fall over anything and clean out toy boxes. Toys we don’t want to keep are taken to homeless shelters, broken toys tossed, and favorites boxed saved and placed in the attic. That night we have pizza cause Momma is cooking for the next days f east and then its hot chocolate and we read Chris Van Allsburg’s THE POLAR EXPRESS and watch White Christmas then Momma gets to recite the Night Before Christmas…

Then as visions of sugar plums dance in their heads, my poppets are placed beneath the covers to sleep and dream of those prancing and pawing hooves on the roof…

Merry Christmas dear readers. May 2009 find you filled with peace and happiness. Yours, Nancy P. O’Berry

Tomorrow is release day at Red Rose Publishing and my story is one slated for release. Its very excigint and I can’t wait to see it out there. At this moment, the story is only on ebook with print to be announced by the publisher. That will really be awesome. Imagine having a book available at Amazon with an IBSN number, a copyright, title page, the whole kit and kaboodle. I have two more stories written that will be available sometime in the next year. I will of course let people know when these works will be released. Faith is the smallest of the three stories. I guess you can see she is a teaser of things to come. I know there is likely to be at least two to three more with a total of 6 Sweetbrier books. I’m looking forward to having fun with this series.

I’m the type of mom that likes to plan ahead. When the children, nieces, nephews were all home and not scattered across the U.S. my house was ground zero for Thanksgiving. Total of people chowing down neared twenty. So you had the adult table and the childrens table to set. Needless to say with that amount of folks it required planning second to D Day invasion or as my father-in-law fondly called it “Feast Day Invasion”.

I cooked my stuffing in pan cake pans froze them and warmed them up that day. Pies and cakes were cooked the weekend before and that day only the greens. Yes in the south you must have your collard greens cooked with ham grease. Which leads me to this story.

I believe it was about seven years ago, my oldest son was seventeen and I was a working elementary school teacher. Because time was crunched, I got it into my head to cook the Thomas T. Turkey on Sunday before the holiday. Son was working at a local eattery so he helped me lift the 23 pound bird and place it in the roaster then to the oven before work. Not a problem.

While my bird was cooking, I fixed my collards. Now, when you cook a country ham, you save the grease for seasoning. Again, I freeze mine in old ice trays so you can plop a cube into the mix. I forgot, the trays had been broken and the only ones I found stored in plastic bags were the naked lady ice cubes. Imagine my husband’s face when I asked him to stir and the upper torso of a woman who was well endowed bobbed to the surface. I should have known at that point things were going down hill.

So turkey browned and cooked. Collards tender and stored in tupperware awaiting Thursday. We all went to sleep with vision of feasting dancing in our heads. The next morning, I readied for work as son stumbled into the kitchen for his morning corn flakes.

“Will, I’m off to work. don’t touch the turkey. I’ve got left over meatloaf for your lunch see you at four.”

I never should have mentioned the turkey.

According to him, everytime he opened the icebox the reynolds wrap (aluminium foil) lifted and he heard a wee little voice, “TASTE ME”. He slammed the door but he said it kept drawing him back. So, he cut a piece from the bottom to make sure it was done. He SAID it tasted great, however it was like Lays – “You couldn’t eat just one”. So… Yes, he went back and back and back and back. When I got home at four, he was curled into a ball complaining of stomach pains. Inside my refrigerator were the skeleton remains of my Thanksgiving Feast. Several doses of pepto bismal later my son went to the store and bought a fresh turkey so that Thanksgiving Day around 5 a.m. we began cooking Theodore G. (for glutton) Turkey and it was ready for the Rockwell portait.

Our family still talks about that Thanksgiving. I used it to demonstrate descriptive writing for my fifth grade students and yesterday in the store, one of them home from College asked if I remembered that.

My son called this am from “Lanta” that city in Georgia for those that may not understand southern speak (Atlanta) he wanted to know if I was cooking the Terry early. Yes, my children like to name the bird. I told him I would not cook it until Tuesday when he came home so he could sit infront of the oven with the little light on an watch it. Then, it will go under lock and key until Thursday.

Some traditions never change.
